Hailing from Howard County, MD, Brandon Perry better known as K.A.A.N. ((Knowledge Above All Nonsense) is rising to be one of the greatest artists of his generation. With his hunger to improve and devotion to his craft, some may consider the MC to be the true definition of a purist, but what he really defines is pure talent.
As a student of the culture, it's only fitting that his name K.A.A.N is an acronym for knowledge above all nonsense. With hundreds of songs and dozens of self released full lengths, one would speculate that the wordsmith got involved with music at an early age, but it was actually around the age of 21 that he first tried his hand at rapping. Influences include Nirvana and grunge rock to Radiohead to Nas, Tupac, Biggie Big Pun, Jay-Z and Wu-Tang all the way to modern day acts The Figures, Curren$y and Logic.
Initially, it was curiosity that led him to experiment, however, he knew he wanted to transform his musical tastes as a fan into something of his own. Simply stating, "I just wanted to try to write and record to a beat" and those trials led to the discovery of his purpose and passion. The late start didn't present much of a learning curve. Within the first 2 years, he was going to studios in nearby Baltimore, doing shows regularly and building an audience of millions with viral videos. With no promotion or marketing and no smoke & mirrors, it was his complex lyrical displays, unique style and versatility that was gaining new fans by the hour. Once he recognized the momentum, his work ethic tripled. Consistently creating new content and new music at lightning speed has become his model. It has proven so well for him, that he only focuses on music and tends to shy away from interviews, social media antics and intimate artist to fan relationships that are synonymous with todays standards.
100 percent independent, K.A.A.N. has organically built a sustainable life as rapper without the usual ingredients. No, he's not a household name just yet, but contemporaries, label executives and industry icons from Dr. Dre and Busta Rhymes, as well as respected critics at NPR, to name a few, are singing his praises. This is all his own design. He's not working towards stardom, he's working toward unlimited and uncompromising creative freedom. "I just want to make whatever I want" he proclaims, and a few samples from his extensive catalog prove he is at liberty to do so. Mixtapes, albums, EP's and singles boast a vast range of styles, formulas, concepts and sounds. He effortlessly combines melodies, intricate rapid fire rapping, high level lyrical thought into a refreshing yet nostalgic approach that helps him stand out in today's landscape. Trap, boom bap, emo, pop, experimental and rock are all a part of his repertoire. Artistically it's helped transcend K.A.A.N. beyond labels and boxes to where his abilities as an all around vocalist are at the forefront.
With an impressive resume generating tens of millions of streams, numerous appearances on high profile Spotify playlists, millions of YouTube views, a loyal community of fans and several releases on vinyl, K.A.A.N is humbly gracious, but anticipating a greater portfolio. The no nonsense MC strives to embody and empower knowledge one song after the next. The knowledge he represents will continue to rise above all.
